Vets Helping Vets — Jobs & Employment

Work, hired with preference.

Veteran-focused job boards, Tampa Bay workforce resources, and hiring programs designed specifically for those who served. Each of these channels offers something general job sites cannot — veterans' preference, military-skill translation, or employers actively seeking the experience you bring.

Hiring programs worth knowing about

Veterans' Preference in federal hiring

Veterans with qualifying service receive a 5 or 10-point preference on federal civil service exams. Disabled veterans may qualify for additional non-competitive hiring pathways. Apply via USAJobs with your DD-214 + VA disability letter ready.

Florida veteran employment tax credit for employers

Florida offers tax incentives to businesses that hire disabled veterans. Tell prospective employers about it — it reduces their cost of hiring you. Details at the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity site.

GI Bill + apprenticeship

The Post-9/11 GI Bill pays a monthly housing allowance during on-the-job training and apprenticeships — not just classroom education. Trades, construction, electrical, plumbing all qualify through approved programs.

VR&E (Chapter 31)

Veteran Readiness and Employment is a VA program for veterans with service-connected disabilities. Covers training, education, and support services to return to a suitable job — often more generous than the GI Bill for those who qualify.

SBA for veteran entrepreneurs

Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business (SDVOSB) certification unlocks federal contracting set-asides. The SBA Veterans Business Outreach Center (VBOC) in Tampa runs training and consulting at no cost.
